The Booth Film Critics Society (BFCS) was established in 2004 by a group of staff and students at the Moving Image Archive of the North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking*. Fed up with the state of mainstream film criticism and the preponderance of acclaim for mediocrity, the fearless charter members - eschewing the conventional groupthink mentality associated with most film critics organizations - banded together to bring integrity, originality, and thoughtfulness back into the discussion on film.

The BFCS is the intellectual domain of the full-time staff of film archivists, student workers, and alumni of the Moving Image Archives, as well as other select individuals. We are all guided by the same passion and enthusiasm for film, but we are each defined by our individual tastes and experiences. As the divide between popular critical consensus and our own judgment grows larger, the eclectic voice of the BFCS offers an exciting alternative to the lethargy of modern film culture.
